Patient Care
At Newton Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe overall health and wellness begin with good oral health. And good oral health goes way beyond your teeth. We offer treatment, consultation, and help for these issues:
-
Sleep Apnea
More than 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, which can cause high blood pressure, weight gain, cardiovascular disease, severe headaches and constant sleepiness. But Newton Cosmetic Dentistry can help.
Sleep apnea sufferers actually stop breathing while asleep because collapsed tissues in the back of the throat blocks the airway. Dentists can treat people with mild or moderate sleep apnea with a mandibular advancement device, or MAD, which looks like a simple mouthguard but keeps the airway open.
To find out more, visit the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine: www.aadsm.org. Then talk to Newton about getting tested and treated for sleep apnea.
-
Pre-Procedure Antibiotics
The American Heart Association recommends that people with some heart conditions or joint replacements take antibiotics before dental procedures. The AHA updated those guidelines in 2007. If you suspect you may need antibiotics, ask us or visit: www.ada.org/2157.aspx.
-
Periodontal Disease
More than 70 percent of Americans have periodontal, or gum disease. Gum disease is more than just unsightly—recent studies show sufferers have a much higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Check out: www.ada.org/3063.aspx.
Drs. Newton can diagnose and treat periodontal disease before it becomes a major problem.
-
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)
Dry mouth can be caused by medications, aging, radiation, or other everyday stresses. While common, dry mouth can lead to major tooth decay, periodontal disease, and infections. To learn more about the causes and treatments, visit: www.ada.org/2664.aspx.
-
Fluoride Use
Do you know how much fluoride you get? Too much can be harmful. Too little, and you put your teeth at risk for decay. To find out more about the benefits of getting daily fluoride, visit: www.ada.org/4045.aspx.
-
Sjogrens Syndrome
A chronic, systemic autoimmune disorder of the salivary glands, Sjogrens Syndrome causes the glands to malfunction, resulting in a dry mouth. Dry mouth, or xerostomia, can be devastating to your oral health and cause difficulty speaking, swallowing, chewing, and tasting food. This can make dentures less stable and lead to tooth decay and oral infections. Sjogrens Syndrome is diagnosed by your physician, but the dentist plays a major role in your treatment. Newton Cosmetic Dentistry offers a variety of tactics to help fight the condition--mints, gum, sprays, fluoride trays and even prescriptions. If you have been diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome, please contact our office for an overall oral health evaluation.
